DG Youth Orchestra
Dumfries and Galloway Youth Orchestra

The Return of Dumfries and Galloway Youth Orchestra!

After an enforced gap of 18 months (during which we did the best we could online) DGYO got back together on 21 August 2021 in the assembly hall of St Joseph's College, Dumfries.  Thanks to Dumfries and Galloway Council, the school, and Graham the janitor for helping us to get going once more.

We had lost some original players who had gone to university or left the area.  But we have also gained some new players.  Welcome to all!

And talking of new players please spread the word that DGYO welcomes all young players of orchestral instruments who live, work or study in Dumfries and Galloway and we offer opportunities for all levels of experience.  The orchestra is free to join and travelling expenses are available.

We have also recently welcomed a new trustee - Josh Ellicott, the father of two of our new players.  Josh is a professional singer as well as a proficient keyboard player and occasional dabbler with the tuba.  He came to the rehearsal on 21 August and played the keyboard for us to help support the players.  Thank you Josh.

In addition we have two new instrumental tutors helping us now.  Rebecca Carson is a professional flautist and teacher who has recently moved to this area.  Joanne Bertram hails from this area.  She has been at university in Glasgow, but has returned to D&G teaching music in Castle Douglas High School and helping DGYO as cello tutor.  Welcome to you both.

We shall have another rehearsal on 28 August followed by a short concert for the enjoyment of parents of the players.  The programme will consist of the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum from Verdi's Requiem, two Klezmer pieces and a number that some of us remember hearing on the "wireless" in our youth - Rock Around The Clock.

After that keep an eye on the website and the Facebook page to see what else we plan to do in the future!
